Telefonica buys rights to the Spanish league for 600 mde – FORTUNE

MADRID (AFP) – The telecommunications giant Telefonica paid 600 million euros for the exclusive television retransmission rights of the main parties of the first and second leagues Spain Division and Copa del Rey.

“The League and Telefónica reached an agreement for the marketing of rights to exploit audiovisual content soccer payment in the domestic market during the 2015/16 season,” he announced in a statement.

The agreement “gives Telefónica the exclusive exploitation rights in La Liga, Liga Adelante and all the offer of payment of the Copa del Rey matches,” he said.

Both companies considered that this agreement is “also beneficial to the other operators, clubs and fans.”

The Spanish Professional Football League had estimated last week that the sale of television rights internationally would provide the same amount per season.

“After the round of request for proposals made in the international market for audiovisual rights, the League would point out that the amounts that are to be obtained will be approximately 600 million euros per season, a fact that is important progress “had been assured in a statement.

Thus, total revenues for the broadcasting of Spanish professional football will amount to 785 million euros in the 2013-2014 season to 1,200 million which is about to begin.

This agreement was made under a new system of collective selling of rights which seeks to improve income and help the Spanish league to compete with the Premier, to which feared losing some of their best players.

The Premier League sold its television rights to BT and Sky Sports for 6,900 million euros for the 2016-2019 seasons.

So far each club individually negotiated its revenue with carriers, which benefited big as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In May, the Spanish players threatened to strike against the new centralized sales system asking more to the smaller clubs will devote part. Unemployment was prevented by a court decision.
