Chrysler announces investments to expand two plants in the united States which could threaten the production in a … – Deutsche Welle

The giant automobile Fiat Chrysler plans a strong investment in the traditional market of jeeps in the united States, which will create around 2,000 jobs, as announced by the company today. On the eve of the great fair of the sector in Detroit, the company aims to revive its model Jeep Wagoneer. The consortium Italian-american said that it would invest a billion dollars to the expansion of two plants in the states of Michigan and Ohio.

“The additional benefit of the investment in Warren (Michigan) is that it will allow the plant to produce the pickup truck the ‘pickup’ of heavy-duty Ram, which is currently being produced in Mexico,” adds the official statement. Note, however, is not accurate if the intention of Fiat Chrysler is to finish replacing the production of the Ram pickup that is made in the plant in Saltillo, in the mexican state of Coahuila, or if in the future this model will be manufactured in the two countries.

Before the threat of tariffs on the part of Trump

The announcement takes place after the president-elect of the united States, Donald Trump, to ask the sector to the creation of more jobs in the country and accused major automobile manufacturers such as General Motors and Toyota to produce in Mexico to pay low wages, threatening them with high punitive tariffs. The announcement of Fiat Chrysler is known five days after of the group, Ford announced the cancellation of an investment of $ 1,600 million in its plant in the mexican city of San Luis Potosi.

The statement did not allude to these topics, but remember that today’s announcement is the second phase of an industrialization plan that was released in January of last year and which seeks to make maximum use of the facilities in the united States. The CEO of Fiat Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne, said in the press release that the plans of the consortium had been determined previously and these plans seek to “strengthen the united States as a nucleus for those vehicles” and, in addition, to meet the recent demand in this country and increase exports.
