A delegation from the Government of Thailand, headed by its Director of Fisheries, Dr. Chumnarn Pongsri, and Ambassador of Thailand in Spain, Rattikul Chansuriya, yesterday visited the headquarters of Anfaco-Cecopesca and his new center Advanced technologies Research for Marine and Food Industry (Cytma).

Thailand is a very competitive country in the sector of canned and prepared tuna, and is currently the largest producer and exporter of these products.

But it is also one of the countries to which the European Commission was issued a yellow card for not doing enough to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU or IUU, for their acronym in English). In addition, some time is the target of criticism from NGOs denounce abusive labor practices in its fishing industry.

During the visit, the Thai delegation raised the secretary general of Anfaco, Juan Vieites, and his team the possibility that Thailand will provide technical assistance to avoid receiving the dreaded red card, which would imply the prohibition to export their products to the EU. Today the Community market absorbed 35,000 tonnes of Thai fishery products.

As reported Faro de Vigo, Thai claimed to be aware of the chasm that separates the working conditions in Europe and in your country. And while they said they are trying to combat illegal fishing, they explained that they encounter difficulties and limitations that prevent them from progressing as they wanted.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the employer took the opportunity to show visitors their new 5,800 square meter laboratory. They also talked about the objectives of the Observatory Traceability Cluster Conservation Sea Products Foundation, which promotes the defense of fair competition in the market for tuna EU, boosting the monitoring and enforcement of current regulations, in aspects such as compliance UUI and sustainability of resources, respect for human and labor rights, and the quality and food safety.

According Anfaco, “the Observatory on Traceability is an important tool for the industry, whose purpose is to ensure the availability of a true level playing field on the Community market in tuna that can compete on equal terms for the processing industry EU with other international operators from third countries to achieve sustainable development of the industry. ”

This initiative reinforces the commitment to respect the most advanced standards in the field of corporate social responsibility as well as the labor, social, environmental field, quality and food safety.
