Iberdrola closes its largest plant in the world – EntornoInteligente

Expand / Spanish power just off the Scottish Longannet plant, creating doubts about the future of security of supply in the UK.

Scottish Power, British subsidiary of Iberdrola, has ended at 3 pm British time to the activity of the Longannet coal plant. With 2,400 megawatts of power, this plant was the largest in the Spanish group worldwide, and supplied each year electricity for about two million British homes.

Iberdrola, which provisioned 230 million euros in accounts 2015 to meet closing costs Longannet attributed its closure to the rates levied on CO2 emissions from coal plants in the United Kingdom and the high costs of transporting electricity from Scotland to the major centers of consumption country.

In his 46 years of life, each of the groups Longannet turbine has produced electricity for more than 200,000 hours, burning 177 million tons of coal in total.

According a statement of Scottish Power, “even during the last winter, Longannet has been essential to meet the power needs of Scotland and media produced enough electricity to supply more than 25% of households in the region.”

the shutdown of this plant, along with that of other plants companies like SSE, RWE and Centrica, has opened a strong debate in the UK about the supply security of the country. According to estimates by analysts at Barclays, the power generation capacity in the country could fall below the maximum demand in the coming winter.

Incentives for construction of new plants The British government is trying to solve that imbalance by encouraging the construction of new gas plants, renewable and nuclear, and expand international electrical connections in the country. But the facilities coming online this year will not compensate for the loss of Longannet.

The network operator could be forced next winter, as happened in November 2015, to ask large industrial customers to limit their activity on days with more consumption.

Iberdrola, meanwhile, plans to invest about 1,300 million pounds (1,650 million euros) per year until 2020 in the UK, especially in wind park and an underwater connection to bring renewable energy from Scotland to eastern England.

in the Longannet plant worked 236 people, including 45 people will continue until December in the dismantling work. Scottish Power is analyzing possible future plans for the site.
