Volkswagen has committed to carry out a “plan of action” in the European Union (EU) that will repair the cars affected by the scandal of the illegal broadcasting of 2017, reported the European Commission (EC) in a statement released today.
In a meeting with the commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourová, the director of Volkswagen Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz promised on Wednesday to “return the vehicles to the standards” of europe, and to inform affected consumers about the procedure here to the end of 2016.
“This is an important first step towards equality of treatment of consumers in the EU”, said commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourová, who promised for his part that “will closely monitor this commitment,” and will continue to work with consumer organisations, authorities and Volkswagen.
Volkswagen agreed also to hold a meeting “shortly” to take stock of the situation.
After meeting with 31 consumer associations in Brussels, Jourová will hold meetings with national associations, on the 29th of September, and with the national authorities.
The CE has analyzed what are the difficulties faced by consumers in cases such as Volkswagen and tries to get the company to provide compensation to the customers community as well as americans by the scandal of the illegal broadcasting of their diesel engines.
In the case of Spain, the organisation Facua has claimed that the consortium car German paid to those affected, an amount that, while it is still to be announced, would the 4.440 euros ($ 5,000), which Volkswagen agreed to in the united States in a court settlement.
The past month of July, Volkswagen reached an agreement with the united States, with a cost of close to 15,000 million dollars to the company, but argued that this does not have any legal effect outside of the country, to which the EC responded that the european consumers should be equally compensated.
