Attack on Berlin: a truck rammed against a christmas market and left at least 12 dead and 50 injured – LA NACION (Argentina)

A truck railed today against a crowd near a christmas market in Berlin, informed the German police, a fact that left at least 12 dead and 50 wounded.

There is an arrested suspect (the local police believes that it is the driver), and the other dead (as would be the chaperone, reportedly, was Polish). The event occurred on the 20.15 (local time) in the central square Breitscheidplatz, when the vehicle, of Scania brand, left the roadway and entered the market.

“There are at least 50 people injured, some serious. There are dead,” said a spokeswoman for the Berlin police. While the same force tweeted that the deceased persons were, at least, nine.

According to several German media, the driver of the vehicle, with registration of Poland, went on the run after you have run over the crowd.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, said he regretted quickly the tragedy. “We are in mourning and we hope that the number of wounded will receive the necessary assistance”, said her spokesman, Steffen Seibert on Twitter.

according To the newspapers Berliner Zeitung and Berliner Morgenpost, the incident occurred on the night in front of the church in memory of emperor William, on the street Breitscheidplatz, in a commercial area in the west of the German capital.

“we’re mourning the dead and we hope that you will be able to help the many wounded”, reported the spokesperson of the German government, Steffen Seibert, who leads chancellor Angela Merkel.

While the mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, said it was a “shock” and a fact “horrible”, but felt that the situation is “controlled”. Also not ruled out a terrorist attack. “What we see here is dramatic,” said Müller in the square Breitscheidplatz. And added that his thoughts are with the family, the dead and the wounded.

For its part, the U.S. called it “apparent terrorist attack” incident with a truck. “The united states condemns in the strongest possible terms what appears to be a terrorist attack on a christmas market in Berlin”, said the spokesman of the National Security of the White House, Ned Price, said in a statement.
