WASHINGTON, May 22 (Reuters) – Researchers at the Department of Justice United States identified a criminal irregularity by General Motors to not report an ignition system defective and are negotiating what could be a record fine, reported Friday the New York Times.

The Times reported, citing people briefed on the investigation, which both parties could reach an agreement as soon as this summer.

The final amount is still being negotiated, but is expected to exceed 1,200 million paid last year by the Japanese Toyota acceleration problems to hide, according to the newspaper.
