At least 27 people died in the attack Imperial Marhaba hotel in Tunisia, in the popular seaside resort of Sousse, an official of the Interior Ministry said on Friday.

A local security source said the attack was in the Imperial Marhaba hotel.

The body a man armed with Kalashnikov assault rifle lying in the area after being killed in a shootout with police, the source said.

Sousse is one of the most popular beaches in Tunisia and attracts tourists from Europe and neighboring countries in North Africa.

Tunisia has been on alert since March, when armed Islamists attacked the Bardo Museum killing a group of foreign tourists, in one of the most violent episodes in a decade in the North African country.
