The approval came by a large majority despite dissent within the ruling party, Syriza, by 229 votes in favor, 64 against and 6 abstentions. Syriza 32 deputies voted against, including the former Minister of Finances own, Iannis Varoufakis. The Energy Minister Panayotis Lafazanis, and three deputy ministers, the Social Security, Dimitris Stratulis, Defense Minister Kostas Ísijos and second Finance Valavani Nadia, who resigned on Wednesday (07/15/2015) from office, also voted against it.
In his speech prior to the vote the Greek prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, called for the unity of his parliamentary group. “I would not do a favor for our rivals to become a small parenthesis in time,” Tsipras said, referring to a statement by the conservative New Democracy, which said the leftist government would be a parenthesis in history.
Tsipras said that the three options in negotiating with partners were to accept the current agreement, a disorderly collapse of the country or exit from the eurozone. Tsipras stressed that be the “last” to avoid their “responsibilities” and “the last will facilitate the fall of a leftist government.” He further stressed that he does not believe in the agreement signed on Monday at the European Council, but said the government is “obliged to implement”
