ABC of Spain 2 / The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased in all regions in 2014 and six of them -The Rioja, Extremadura, Canary Islands, Valencia, Navarra and Murcia- rose above 2%. The National Statistics Institute (INE) published Friday’s first estimate of the Regional Accounts of Spain in 2014, indicating that the Community of Madrid, the Basque Country and Navarre are the communities with the highest GDP per capita, while Extremadura, Andalusia and Melilla are at the opposite end.
According to the INE, lower GDP growth in volume corresponded to Galicia (0.5%), the autonomous cities of Ceuta (0.6%) and Melilla (0.8%) and Asturias (0.8%). La Rioja was the autonomous region which recorded higher growth of GDP, with 2.5%, followed by Extremadura and Canarias (2.2% in both cases), Valencia (2.1%), Navarra and Murcia ( 2.0% in both cases), Baleares (1.9%) and Aragon (1.7%).
Catalonia and Castile and Leon behaved like the national average, which was 1, 4%, while Andalusia grew 1.3%, and the Basque Country Castilla-La Mancha and Cantabria 1.2% and 1% Madrid. According to INE, the good performance of the Rioja economy responds to the behavior of its manufacturing and the services sector.
In the case of Galicia, its low growth responds to fall in value added associated with the industry sector Energy and Construction. Madrid is the region with the highest GDP per capita, with 31,004 euros per person, followed by the Basque Country (29,683 euros) and Navarra (28.124 euros).
Another four Catalonia, La Rioja, Aragon regions and Baleares- were above the national average, which was 22,780 euros. On the opposite side are Extremadura (15,752 euros per inhabitant), Andalucía (16,884 euros), the autonomous city of Melilla (16,941 euros).
Disposable income households INE also publishes accounts of the industry households in 2012, showing that households in the Basque Country were those that had a higher income per capita, with 18,950 euros (figure 31.5% higher than the national average). Followed Madrid (17,980 euros), Navarre (17,733 euros) and Catalonia (16,618 euros).
By contrast, Extremadura (with 10,805 euros per capita), the autonomous city of Melilla (10,933) and Andalucía (with 11,403), had the lowest records.
The average national figure of 2012 was 14,414 euros per capita, surpassed by nine autonomous. Households that experienced less decline in disposable income per capita in 2012 over the previous year were those of Castilla y León and Galicia.
