MADRID (AP) .- A Spanish court reduced the bail to the Infanta Cristina, waiting to be tried for tax fraud, 2.7 million euros (3 million dollars) to barely half a million.
The Provincial Court of Palma lowered bail about 450,000 euros, a figure that according to counsel sister of King Philip VI is more in keeping with what may have to pay if found guilty.
In a ruling Thursday, the court said the original amount of the bond was “disproportionate”.
Cristina, 50, is accused of tax evasion and her husband Inaki Urdangarin, facing charges of laundering money and fraud. It is the first member of the royal family to be judged from the restoration of the monarchy in Spain in 1975.
Through its lawyers the couple has maintained his innocence repeatedly. It expects the trial to take place later this year
