ATHENS (Reuters) – The European Central Bank raised for the third time in six days the roof of the emergency liquidity to Greek banks can take the central bank, said a banking source told Reuters on Monday, declining to specify in how much.
The governing council of the ECB held a conference call on Monday to discuss extending emergency liquidity assistance after the Greek savers withdraw some 4,200 million euros from banks in the country last week amid fears that Athens could not reach an agreement with its creditors.
“The Governing Council has raised the ELA ceiling and meet again by telephone at any time that is necessary, “said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The ECB raised the ceiling of the emergency aid in 1100 million to 84,100 million euros on 17 June. On Friday it rose to 1,800 million euros, according to a government official.
Sources in Frankfurt and Brussels said that requests for cash withdrawal on Monday had reached 1,000 million euros.
