LUXEMBOURG / BRUSSELS (AFP) – The European Council called on Thursday for an extraordinary summit of heads of state and government of the euro area to discuss the situation in Greece.
“I decided to convene a summit of the euro zone on Monday, June 22 at 19:00 pm. It is time to urgently discuss the situation in Greece at the highest political level,” said the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
The announcement came after the finance ministers of the eurozone failed to reach an agreement on Greece’s debt.
The European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Pierre Moscovici, made an appeal Thursday to the Greek authorities to accept a “reasonable compromise”.
“There is little time to avoid the worst. The aim of the game is approaching,” Moscovici said.
While the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, warned Greece that it is urgent to “restore dialogue between adults”.
The partners of Athens in the euro area, as well as, EU and IMF, expected lending institutions make counterproposals that would allow Greece sealed an agreement on a series of reforms.
This agreement depend 7,200 million euros, the last of the second bailout program that Athens needs to deal with a maturity of 1,600 million euros with the IMF before 30 June.
The further bailout program expires on June 30. Without agreement, they warned today, the last part of the ransom will be lost.
The discussion of the finance ministers of Greece lasted an hour and a half and was described by a European diplomatic source as “tragic”.
