MADRID (Reuters) – trade Unions and employers will be responsible for setting the amount of the interprofessional minimum wage (SMI) of Spain in 2018, 2019 and 2020, announced Friday the Government after the agreement reached with the socialists to raise the next year’s 8 percent.
The resolution to raise the minimum wage until the 707,7 euros from the 655,2 euros today, its biggest rise in 30 years, is part of a broader agreement between the government of the Popular Party and the PSOE, which includes support of the deficit targets for the next few years.
The fact that the two main parties to the negotiating table to put the amount of the SMI to the margin of the unions bothered to workers ‘ representatives, who criticized that she had “stolen” the negotiation in the social dialogue.
UGT and CCOO also reported that the increase agreed to by Government and the PSOE falls far short of the union demand that the SMI will reach 800 euros in 2017 and reach the 60 per cent percent of the average wage at the end of legislature.
The secretary of State for Employment, John-Paul Risk, justified the decision by the urgency of the times, but ensured the will of the Executive is to bet on the participation of the social partners on this issue in the next few years.
“For the years 2018, 2019 and 2020, will be the scope of the social dialogue, bipartisan manner, between social partners, including representatives of workers and employers, so that binding will set the minimum wage for the following year,” he said at a press conference.
Risk said that the government would determine the amount of the minimum wage if unions and employers do not reach an agreement before November 15 of each year.
The secretary of State quantified at 223,000, or workers directly affected by the rise in the SMI, but downplayed the possible negative effects on the competitiveness of the country, noting that the salary mass overall of the Spanish economy will only increase a 0.06 per cent.
From the PSOE, their spokesmen was presumed to have taken concessions to the Government of the PP, and found success have been achieved more margin for deficit to the autonomous communities and an increase of 8 percent of the SMI.
“we Decided to make it possible to put in place the Legislature in order to change things (…) that we’re going to continue to be devoted,” said Friday the spokesman of the manager of the PSOE, Mario Jimenez.
