Draghi rejects possibility of being president of Italy – The Economist

The ECB president, Mario Draghi, denied the rumors about his possible candidacy to replace the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, who resigned Wednesday.

“It’s obviously a great honor to circulate my name but not my job” central banker said in an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit. Draghi said he did not want to “feed any speculation.”

Napolitano, 89, on Wednesday announced his resignation as President of the Italian Republic. The parliament, where no party has a majority, must find him a successor to generate consensus.

The name of Mario Draghi as a potential candidate has circulated regularly, although the ECB president has denied ever be interested in charge.

“What matters is the work currently I exercise. I’m happy being able to exercise and keep exercising it,” insists Draghi in Die Zeit.
