ZURICH (Reuters) – Swiss prosecutors searched the offices of HSBC Holdings PLC in Geneva on Wednesday and said it opened a criminal investigation on allegations of aggravated money laundering <. span id = "midArticle_byline">

“A record is ongoing in bank premises, led by Attorney General Olivier Jornot and prosecutor Yves Bertossa” Geneva prosecutors said in a statement.

The prosecution said his research was aimed at HSBC Private Bank (Switzerland) and could be extended to people.

Spokesmen for HSBC in Geneva and London declined to comment on the warrant.

The bank has said that compliance and controls in its Swiss private banking division in the period to 2007 were not up to the needs, but said the business had changed in recent years.

The revelations have caused a political row in Britain over the practices of HSBC and whether the tax authorities had done enough for possible crimes. Other tax authorities are examining complaints to assess whether the bank helped to avoid taxes in their countries.
