Madrid. The Spanish trade deficit decreased by 14.9 percent in the first quarter over the same period of 2014, recording a deficit of 5.524 million euros (6.122 million of dollars), the Ministry of Economy of Spain.
Foreign sales registered an increase of 4.4 percent, the highest recorded in the first quarter of the whole time series, which began in 1971, while imports increased by 2.5 percent.
Exports of goods totaled 60972.8 million, while imports amounted to 66496.8 million. Falling energy prices helped reduce 36.4% the energy deficit.
In March a trade deficit of 890.6 million euros was recorded, 56.6 percent less than a year earlier. It emphasizes the behavior of the automotive sector, which in the first quarter generated 17.3% of exports and increased sales abroad by 19.5%; followed by durable consumer goods (1.5% of the total), which increased 14.5%.
As for imports, driven by the improvement in industrial activity and the strengthening of consumption, include capital goods sector, which grew by 14.6%, thanks to higher industrial machinery and transportation equipment, among other sub-sectors.
Exports to the EU accounted for 65.3% of total sales abroad. EU sales advanced 5, 8%, due mainly to increased exports to Germany (8.8%), Italy (10.9%), France (3.4%) and the UK (8 %).
