The conversion of energy in motion is the beginning of cars but Audi is already working on a system that converts automotive damping movement applicable and usable energy in the technology of hybrid cars.
In future mobility, energy recovery is of utmost importance, including achievable through suspension of a car.
Audi working on a prototype called “erot” in which electromechanical rotary dampers replace conventional telescopic hydraulic dampers, to save fuel and provide greater comfort.
The principle behind the erot system is explained as follows: every irregularity, every bump, every curve induces kinetic energy in the car and current dampers absorb that energy, which is lost as heat, with the new electromechanical shock with the electrical system of 48 volts, given that energy use in preventing dissipates.
The erot system responds quickly and with minimal inertia. As an active suspension control, it is ideally suited to irregularities of the surface and the driving style of the user. With erot, Audi sets the compression stroke to make it comfortable without compromising movement in extension. Another advantage of the new damping system is its geometry. The heart of this new system are electric motors arranged horizontally in the area of the rear axle efficiently replace the vertical telescopic dampers, which additional space in the trunk.
The erot system allows a second function in addition to the ability to freely set the damping: You can convert the kinetic energy created in compression and extension into electricity. To achieve this, one arm absorbs movement of the wheel and transmits power through a gearset to an electric, same engine converts it into electricity.
erot The new technology is based on a 48-volt electrical subsystem. In the configuration of the prototype, a DC converter subsystem connected to the main electrical 48 volt 12 volt system, which includes a high-efficiency generator.
The initial results of tests for erot technology are promising, and would therefore be possible to use in future Audi series models. A prerequisite for this is the electrical system of 48 volts, and in the next step of evolution, planned for 2017, the 48 volt system will serve as the primary electrical system in a new model of the brand with the four rings, which will use a lightweight high performance hybrid system, which offer potential fuel savings of up to 0.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
