Audi develops regenerative shock absorbers – Economy and Business online

Audi engineers decided to get to the front in terms of fuel efficiency for electric and hybrid cars.

They developed a prototype damper called erot, also minimize the annoying jolts of the road, you can generate electricity to power the car and thus save fuel; or, recharge the batteries of an electric model.

The system works much like regenerative braking, which is a technology that captures the energy normally lost during braking a car way. Instead of using friction brakes, which disposed of the energy as heat, electric and hybrid vehicles turn their engines in reverse. This slows the vehicle and, in turn, generates enough energy to do it from again.

In this way, the kinetic energy generated by self-suspension movement of the car is used by the system erot Audi. In that device, the traditional cushions are replaced by horizontal electric motors. Thus, each wheel movement is converted into electricity that becomes the vehicle through a battery of 48 volts.

This type of dampers art improves fuel efficiency and helps reduce polluting emissions . In this sense, Audi notes that erot system can reduce emissions by up to 3 grams of CO {-2} per kilometer.

Audi adds that the system can regenerate up to 630 watts, with averages hovering around 130 to 150 watts. Presumably, these differences are due to the nature of the route, as well as the quality of the road.

Audi adds that, together with the suspension system erot, is a software that allow you to adjust the optimal damping for each kind of way.

Although dampers Audi are still in the testing phase and are just a prototype, the German company says it is investing all its efforts on perfecting the erot to implement in future models series.
