The Apple Watch already is not so bad – Gizmodo in Spanish

The Apple Watch original was not the amazing product that we had hoped, but he did what he promised. You could take calls from your wrist, see the notifications of your phone, and even track your heart rate. And with the last software update, the watch has the speed and interface improvements that I needed. You can now send messages! Or write an entire e-mail. The problem is that only nerds want a smartwatch as well; so, for the new version known as the Series 2, Apple has focused on what people really want: a gauge of fitness.

The first Apple Watch (now called Series 1) was a device objectively boring, that they did not do enough to justify its innumerable aspects annoying —among them the lags, the terrible battery life and the confusing controls. Thanks to the appeal of Apple, however, became the smartwatch more sold of all times (that doesn’t mean much). Is still well below the wearable more sold, the Fitbit, which accounts for 24.5% of the market, when Apple only has 7.5%.

One of the big reasons is the price. The best bracelet Fitbit only costs $ 150. The Apple Watch Series 1 started originally $ 350, and now with the discount part of $ 270, which is still very expensive. Apple misjudged what sell the Watch original as an article of fashion. That made it a hard sell to the fans of the watches, I want the clock to discuss your price rather of depreciate like a technological product. And also made it a hard sell to fans of fashion because, despite the number of straps, faces that are available, it is still a square box.

But perhaps the most important reason is that no one wants especially a smartwatch. Smart watches do not contribute significantly to your day-to-day, such as a smartphone or a bracelet of fitness. A phone is a necessity, and a bracelet of fitness, like yoga pants, sneakers and t-shirts from Under Armour, you identify as a person committed to their health; not to mention the fact that actually do something useful. The Apple Watch original, however you identified it as an idiot with a line of credit decent and passion for the notifications.

If you look at the sales figures, makes a lot of sense for Apple to stop advertising the watch as the future of technology and fashion, and start to sell it as the gauge of fitness, more attractive and with more features on the market. By combining the new approach to fitness with a great update of the operating system, an improved battery and a better speed, the Apple Watch has suddenly become a device that a rational human being would buy it without remorse.

Apple has managed to introduce a hardware fairly impressive in the square body of the watch. In addition to the optical reader of heart rate and accelerometer that records movement, that were already in the Series 1, the new model integrates a GPS is incredibly accurate for tracking runs, walks, and times to take your dog. The new Watch has a mode to test water that is lit with a button on the screen, so you can take it with you even though diluvie, you go swimming or you’re sweating like a pig. It is a nuisance having to remember to turn on the water resistance, but our test unit was soaked several times as I washed his hands and the device continued to function properly.

These functions are very well, but it’s worth noting that are standard features in smartwatches fitness as the Moto 360 Sport and the horrible, but supercompleto— Garmin Epix.

Thank God, the Apple Watch looks nothing like a gadget for fitness. Instead of saying loudly "I’m training for a triathlon", yells "I like that it appears that I exercise, but what you tell me of what nice are these interchangeable straps?". The straps are basic plastic and nylon, which marry perfectly with that aesthetic fitness/fashion, and are light enough to not interfere with your workouts. The straps are more expensive might not be comfortable to train. I have a metal strap on my Series 1, and is sufficiently heavy to distract me when I try to do any type of high-intensity exercise.

If you do not use the integrated GPS of the Apple Watch Series 2 (you can use the iPhone through Bluetooth on your place), you will win a big boost in battery. It is not large enough to go to sleep with the watch —both the new and the old are devices that require you to load them each night— but you can, sometimes, forget to charge it and overcome part of the next day. Most nights, my Series 1 with just a 20 or 30% load. The Series 2 is around 50%.

The bigger battery for the GPS is not the only reason that the Series 2 seems to last a little longer. Despite having a screen a lot brighter (Apple speaks of a power of 1000 nits, twice as bright as an iPhone) the Series 2 makes a more intelligent use of the auto-brightness. It is more dim in low light than the Series 1 and it seems that it only uses its maximum brightness when the sunlight shines directly on the screen. That’s why the Series 2 don’t spend so much energy in making the dial of the watch is visible.

There is another important change in the new Apple Watch that is not related to fitness or with the battery management. The Series 2 is faster than the Series 1, that already saw a major improvement in that sense with watchOS 3. The new device uses the same processor as the Series 1, but a new GPU causes the animations to go faster, which means that applications open faster. The application Philips Hue takes 2,42 seconds to open with a Series 1, but only 1,67 seconds in the Series 2. And both Dark Skies as Fantastical open in less than a second, whereas in the Series 1 will take a little more than a second. They are not figures of revolution. They are not a reason to upgrade to the new Apple Watch. But they are noticeable.

The Series 2 and the Series 1 are practically indistinguishable, except by the ring of metal around the sensors of the Series 2.

beyond the new hardware, one of the reasons that both versions of the Apple Watch are now legitimately good is watchOS 3. Scribble, the new handwriting recognition feature of Apple, makes responding to messages or chats of Slack is almost as easy as answering a phone. The application Training and the application of accompaniment for iOS Activity are as good as the software made by Fitbit and its counterparts. The application of Breath is an approach idiot to alternative medicine take conscience of yourself, but it is also a good way to take a quick break when anxiety threatens.

If you don’t have watch or you want to make the leap from a gauge of fitness that offers a limited selection of notifications and a body relatively boring, then it is time to consider the purchase of a Apple Watch. Is the update logic from a meter such as the Fitbit Charge 2 (or the Charge HR). It costs $ 350 or more, which is expensive, but at least it is not perceived as a product in beta phase.

In summary

  • The improvement of the battery and the boost in speed are attractive, but not worth changing clock if you have a Series 1.
  • In fact, it is not worth to buy this instead of the Series 1 if you don’t need the water resistance or the GPS.
  • watchOS 3 has been a blessing for the Apple Watch.
  • The other day I attended without wanting a call from my mother with the watch. I sent a greeting to all the readers of Gizmodo. After they hung up because I didn’t listened very well.
