Jaguar has decided to stand up to Tesla, the maker of luxury electric cars, with the announcement that, by 2018, will start selling its first electric vehicle based on the prototype I-Pace which is exhibited at the Automobile Salon in Los Angeles.
Tesla, the company created by the genius and multi-millionaire american origin south african Elon Musk, has shown that there is a lucrative market for electric vehicles, especially in the luxury segment. And traditional manufacturers of the high-end don’t want to leave that is Tesla which is eat all the cake.
The Jaguar I-Pace is, as the Model X-Tesla’s crossover SUV, all-electric and built from the ground up to take maximum advantage of the characteristics of the new technology. The prototype of the british brand of luxury vehicles take advantage of the platform of the F-Pace, the new SUV from Jaguar, although it is 120 millimeters lower to zoom in to the maximum, the center of gravity to the ground.
The goal of lowering the center of gravity is that the I-Pace will be handled with the traditional characteristics of the vehicles from Jaguar, especially given that the battery of the vehicle adds extra weight.
The battery pack has been designed by the engineers of Jaguar Land Rover, and with its 90-kilowatt/hour, provides a range of 500 kilometers, according to the european measures of performance or 220 miles by u.s. standards.
The battery can be recharged fully in a little over 2 hours with units of 50 Kv DC fast charging. I-Pace also can use a connector home during the night which allows you to accumulate enough electricity to travel about 50 miles a day.
Although the battery adds about 250 kilograms of weight compared to a conventional vehicle, the I-Pace is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (the equivalent of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour) in around 4 seconds thanks to its two electric motors, which generate 400 horsepower, or 700 Nm of torque, and provide all-wheel-drive.
If mechanically the Jaguar I-Pace is extraordinary, the exterior design also comes into that category. Jaguar has indicated that the I-Pace combines "the look of a supercar with the performance of a sporty and space of an SUV".
