Greece: a shift to the left – Milenio.com

The results of the parliamentary elections in Greece took a left turn to their government, where polling results gave 149 seats to SYRIZA, the group left now headed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The election result is not a surprise. Polls showed the day before a big lead for SYRIZA, during the campaign maintained a strong critique of economic policy Andonis Samaras, leader of New Democracy (center right) and former Prime Minister, had maintained.

It is important to note that the discomfort of the Greeks is the result of a long period of economic crisis, which has led to high unemployment and even social protests in the streets, whose images repeatedly circled the world.

This animosity however did the government change its position and held firm the guidelines from the European Community were still dictating, with strong pressure from German Chancellor Angela Merker.

Now, with the popular mandate of the Greeks, Europe waits expectantly decisions of the new government headed by Alexis Tsipras, who allied with the party of the nationalist right Independent Greeks (ANEL) to have a majority and establish government.

The rejection of tough austerity measures that have punished the population is completely clear. So Tsipras the Greeks who had overcome the strong campaign of fear that the government had implemented, noting that “victory is a victory for all European peoples struggling against austerity said in his message of victory. Our foremost priority is to restore dignity to Greece, with a government for all Greeks, we have voted or not. “

The main challenge now facing the new government is to debt negotiation with creditor countries. Not an easy task considering they have not had a flexible approach, on the contrary.

The impact of what progress the Greek government will be a benchmark for other countries like Spain, whose economic situation has also been very difficult in recent years. Hence a serious reflection on the policies that have been implemented in economic matters from Europe to give exit to the crisis, without concrete results in the short term to open.

In addition to the change in economic matters meant the new Greek government, the new Prime Minister failed to conduct protest religious oath before the Archbishop of Athens, which becomes the first head of government not perform this ritual.

Definitely, a major change is taking place in Greece, which will also affect Europe, and why not in other parts of the world, do not you think?
