Four regions of Spain are among the five with the highest level of unemployment in the European Union (EU), showed data released by the EU statistics office, Eurostat.

The Spanish enclave of Melilla border with Morocco, recorded the highest unemployment rate of 34 percent among all European regions in 2015, followed by Andalusia, in southern Spain, where the desmpleo reached 31.5 percent.

The Canary Islands and Extremadura share the fourth position in the European list in unemployment, both with a rate of 29.1 percent.

Among the five regions that top the list area Dytiki Makedonia in Greece, where unemployment stood at 30.7 percent in 2015 is also located.

The Eurostat report reveals a significant gap between the labor markets in different European regions, making a difference between countries north and south of the commonwealth.

The lowest levels of regional desmpleo were observed last year in Freiburg and Lower Bavaria (Germany), with a rate of 2.7 percent in both cases, followed by Prague (Czech Republic), with 2.8 percent .

According to Eurostat, 60 percent of European regions registered in 2015 a decrease of at least 0.5 percent in the unemployment rate compared to 2014.

However, 29 of the 274 regions had equal or exceed 18.8 percent rates, double the European average of 9.4 percent.

Among these, 11 are located in Greece, ten in Spain, four in France and four in Italy.

In contrast, among the 60 regions recorded lower rates to 4.7 percent -half the European average- 24 were from Germany, 21 from the UK and five in Austria.

Eurostat also notes that 48.3 percent of Europeans were unemployed out of work for a year or more.

The highest rates of long-term unemployment were observed in regions of Greece.
