The number of registered unemployed in Spain rose to 4.53 million people in January, traditionally a bad month, announced Tuesday the Ministry of Employment.

The country was in late January with 77,980 more unemployed than in the previous month, when they finished the contracts signed for the Christmas period.

Compared to January 2014, the number of people registered as unemployed fell by 288,744, however, “the largest annual decline since 1998,” the ministry statement.

The Ministry of Employment does not provide the percentages of unemployment. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), which includes people who are actively seeking a job, whether registered or not on the lists, the unemployment rate was 23.7% at the end of 2014.

In late December 2014, the INE had 5.46 million unemployed.
