Alexis Tsipras, Greek Prime Minister expects difficult negotiations at the meeting of finance ministers of the euro area to discuss how to proceed with international bailout of Athens, but remains confident he told a magazine
“I hope difficult negotiations.; however, I am full of confidence, “said Tsipras German magazine Stern, reiterating calls for international creditors to give more time to Athens to implement its reform program.
” We want new loans help (…) Instead of money, we need time to implement our plan of reforms. He promise you, after this, Greece is another country in six months, “he added.
The new government wants to end aid programs that the European Union (EU), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) imposed on Greece for five years.
Athens received loans 240,000 million euros in exchange for tough austerity measures, which had negative effects on people’s lives .
Greece seems willing to make new reforms, but wants that fall within a new program from Athens.
Tsipras adopted a conciliatory tone, saying he wanted a situation where all parties win. However, the confrontational style of the new Greek government has distanced some politicians in Germany.
Hans Michelbach, senior conservative lawmaker, said the new government must show that “not only seeks to pretend that meets” and called on Greece’s partners in the eurozone that do not offer too many concessions to Athens.
“There are programs that have been signed by Greece and which the new government is required. International agreements can not be ruled by voting, “said Michelbach daily Handelsblatt.
At the moment, the EU only gives its approval to an” extension “of the current bailout program, ending on 28 February.
