The International Monetary Fund said on Thursday that its chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, will leave the company and that the search of the person what will happen begin immediately.
Blanchard, a French economist who helped lead the Fund since 2008 and led during the economic downturn, was responsible for many of the policy changes IMF in recent years in response to lessons learned from the crisis.
For example, in 2012 the IMF admitted that austerity programs promoted caused more economic damage than expected during the peak of the crisis.
The Managing Director of IMF, Christine Lagarde, Blanchard said strengthened the reputation of the Fund in economic thought to lead its research department and flagship publication, World Economic Outlook.
“As a leading macroeconomists in the world, Olivier has been at the forefront of the response the background of the global financial crisis, encouraging a fundamental rethinking of macroeconomic policy that still resonates in academic circles and monetary policy “, Lagarde said in a statement. “As everyone in the Fund, will you wonder” added.
Blanchard occupy a new position as senior member of Peterson Institute for International Economics, a study center nonprofit in Washington, the IMF said.
Blanchard taught at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. His work has focused on monetary policy, speculative bubbles and labor policy, among other issues, the IMF said.
Blanchard told the Wall Street Journal that needs to reflect on the issues which he has tackled during his term in background.
