VW chairman resigns for US – Digital Journal Juarez

Washington – The chief executive of Volkswagen in the United States resigned amid the scandal over deception brand around emissions of some of its vehicles, he announced today the company.

President and CEO for the United States, Michael Horn, will “immediately to pursue other opportunities,” the automaker said in a statement. He had been with the German company for 25 years and his current position it took in 2014.

The sudden departure of Horn comes as the company continues to grapple with the consequences of having recognized last year that about 600 thousand of its cars were sold in the United States with software that according to regulators was designed to circumvent testing emissions.

the company could face more than 20 billion dollars in fines from state regulators and federal, as well as hundreds of class action lawsuits filed on behalf of angry car owners. The Justice Department also conducts a criminal investigation.

It was Horn who was sent to apologize to customers at a congressional hearing in October, but at the same time told lawmakers that the main company officials did not know cheat software installed on 11 million diesel engines worldwide

“to me this was not a corporate decision.; were led to some individuals, “said Horn, who added that he personally felt cheated.

A federal judge gave the company until March 24 to reach an agreement with the Government on the withdrawal of affected vehicles. Charles R. Breyer, Judge of the Federal District Court wants to know about the technical solutions available to fix the cars and the state of negotiations around a potential settlement with the owners concerned. Volkswagen has not indicated whether it will be able to meet the deadline.

In September, the company admitted to US regulators that used illegal software installed on their engines called “Clean Diesel” ( “Clean Diesel”). the trap allowed the vehicles to pass emissions tests in laboratories, but when the engines were operating on real roads, throwing oxide levels of harmful nitrogen up to 40 times above the permitted level.

the company is negotiating with lawyers for the owners of defective cars, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency of the US and the California Air Resources Board. Both state and federal regulators must sign to authorize any withdrawals that have scheduled.
