20 years ago, on September 5, 1996, the president of Czech Republic Vaclav Havel, gave the starting signal to the production of Skoda Octavia in a new part of the plant recently inaugurated at the headquarters of the company. This also marked the beginning of a unique success story. Over the next two decades, the Octavia became a bestseller worldwide, and remains the best-selling brand model
In February 1995, Mladá Boleslav, the foundation stone for the new production line in which the first Octavia would be built 18 months later was placed. For this new range, Skoda built a modern production line in a warehouse of 32,000 m2. In addition, a total of 2,500 m2 of office space and 3,000 m2 of social areas were created. In March 1996, the new paint shop, where up to 1,800 bodies ranges Felicia and Octavia models every day would paint was completed.
On September 3, 1996, the president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, he inaugurated the new plant and officially kicked out the series production of the Octavia. “ The plant is beautiful, modern, really attractive. It would be great that all factories have this aspect ” praised Havel during the opening ceremony.
the development of entirely new Octavia range began in 1992, about a year after the brand joined the Volkswagen Group. The Octavia was based on a platform of the Group which was completely new at the time. The robust body structure, which had been developed using the latest CAD (Computer Design) technology, provided an exemplary active and passive safety, combined with front airbags for driver and passenger. In addition, it was the first time Skoda offered new side airbags for the Octavia
The new model had a particularly handy feature. Thanks to the large tailgate hatchback model, customers benefit from excellent access to the trunk 528 liters, which could be extended up to 1,328 liters by folding down the rear seats.
in 1996-the first year of sales-, Octavia customers could choose between two petrol engines four-cylinder turbo diesel engine or propeller. In May 1998, the Octavia Combi model expanded the range; from 1999, the family version was also available with four-wheel drive. The last of the first generation vehicle left the production line in November 2010. Between September 1996 and November 2010, about 970,000 saloons and 470,000 family models were delivered.
The second Octavia generation continued the success story of its predecessor perfectly: between 2004 and 2013, 1.6 million customers opted for the sedan, while 900,000 buyers opted for the familiar Octavia. The third generation of the Octavia has been producing since November 2012. Today, this selling is considered the heart of the brand, and is extremely popular both as a family car in its role as company car. Since the start of production of the first generation, September 3, 1996, more than five million Octavia have left the production halls. Besides the main plant in Mlada Boleslav, the compact is also manufactured in Skoda plants in China, India, Russia and Kazakhstan.
