The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism Repsol has authorized the execution of three drilling for oil in the waters of the Canary Islands, which prospecting for civil insurance should be a 40 million euro and a financial guarantee to environmental risks of 20 million.
This is stated in a resolution of the Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines published today in the Official State Gazette (BOE). Current ownership of the permit applicable to companies Repsol Investigaciones Petrolíferas, Woodside Energy and RWE Dea AG Iberia, in percentages of 50%, 30% and 20%, respectively, the first one acting as operator.
The authorization for surveys is valid for three years and stresses that in case of threat of harm to people, property or the environment, “Repsol immediately stop operations by adopting appropriate measures” .
These operations will be supervised by the Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines and the Department of Industry and Energy of the Prefectures in Las Palmas.
Anticipating possible earthquakes
To make this work, to between 50 and 55 kilometers off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, you must install both islands control systems seismicity, that monitor within 20 kilometers of the survey any movement that occurs in the subsurface as a result of drilling.
It also states that the perforations will stop if an earthquake occurs within 75 kilometers of the survey Natural exceeding 4.5 on the Richter scale intensity.
After the end of each survey, Repsol will have six months or less for all reporting on them.
Three surveys
The project involves conducting two surveys, plus one contingent on the results of the first two, in permits called ‘Canarias 1′ to ‘Canary 9 ‘, located in the Atlantic basin Canaries and so far unexplored by drilling.
The zones are assigned Watermelon (3170 meters deep, the first 870 of water), Custard (3,000 feet deep, 1,019 of water) and Carrot (6900 meters deep, 1,022 of water).
Its purpose is to investigate the existence of hydrocarbon in the basin, with the main objective turbidite sand deposits of Tertiary and Cretaceous.
The drilling unit that carried out the proposed program is the unit of dynamic positioning Rowan Renaissance. It is a drillship generation capacity to drill up to 12,000 meters of drilling deep in water depths of over 3,500 meters.
