Judge OKs VW for amicable settlement in EU – La Jornada online

San Francisco . A federal US judge today gave a preliminary to the multimillion-dollar offer Volkswagen (VW) to reach an agreement with its customers, after the scandal handling emissions in their diesel vehicles approval.

judge Charles Breyer called fair and reasonable agreement for 14 billion 700 million dollars, after a two-hour hearing in San Francisco where US authorities, plaintiffs and the company itself presented their arguments.

according to the agreement, the German automaker could spend up to 10 billion dollars to repurchase or repair about 475 thousand vehicles two-liter diesel of its brands Volkswagen and Audi, equipped with software that manipulated emissions gas during official testing.

VW also agreed to compensate the owners with between 5 000 100 and $ 10,000 each. In addition, the company will spend 2 000 700 million to support environmental projects, and 2,000 additional million dedicated to research on reducing emissions.

The deal could end hundreds of lawsuits court against Volkswagen by US customers, who can now accept the offer or continue the litigation on their own.

the agreement must be approved by the Justice Breyer, who understands in civil lawsuits, before it enters into force. A final hearing was set for October 18, but still remains to define other aspects such as a plan to repair vehicles in compliance with emissions standards in the United States.
