MADRID (Reuters) – international tourists spent in Spain last year a total record of 77.625 million euros, an increase of 9 percent over the previous year, according to a survey by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published Friday.
In December, the total expenditure increased by 19.3 per cent compared with the same month of the previous year, reaching 4.501 million euros.
The growth of expenditure in 2016 is in line with the strong increase (+10.3 percent) of the tourist arrivals to Spain.
The average expenditure per tourist stood in December, to 1,131 euros, with an annual increase of 5.3 per cent, while the expenditure average daily increased by 7.2 per cent to 124 euros.
The main countries of origin in terms of the level of expenditure in 2016 were the United Kingdom (with 20.9 percent of the total), Germany (14.3 per cent) and France (8.8 percent).
Spain is the third tourist destination in the world behind France and the united States, a sector that contributes around 11 percent of national GDP and is one of the main generators of employment.
