Samsung will buy Harman, a u.s. firm specializing in intelligent systems for automobiles.
The transaction was announced Monday by the news agency Reuters, but then it was confirmed by the own Samsung in a statement.
The purchase is valued at US$ 8,000 million and is expected to be completed in mid-2017. Such an acquisition would give Samsung access to the 8,000 employees of Harman working in products of audio systems and car navigation. This does not mean, however, that Samsung wants to or go to manufacture automobiles.
Samsung expects that the purchase of Harman will help you to improve your presence in the business of connected technology and electric cars, which by 2025 will be valued at US$ 100,000 million, according to figures from the press release.
The services of Harman are currently used in more than 30 million cars from brands like BMW, Toyota and Volkswagen. An analyst quoted by Reuters says that Harman needed a greater presence in panels, something that Samsung may well provide.
With the purchase of Harman, Samsung will be able to implement projects related to an interface in the connected car, in an industry in which its rivals Apple and Google already have an advantage with CarPlay and Android Auto, respectively.
With the purchase of Harman, Samsung will also benefit from the diversification of its sources of revenue beyond smartphones, a market that is premised on growth and intensifies, mainly in Asia.
The interest of Samsung in car data — publicly — of 2015, when The Wall Street Journal said that the company would begin the manufacture of auto parts for cars connected to the Internet for the future. In addition, as has been reported several times, Samsung has been in dealings with the manufacturer auto parts Injection Marelli, a subsidiary of Chrysler.
