Expansion / The airline will equip its planes with a new category between ‘business’ and tourist. Buenos Aires, Bogota, Lima and Chicago will be the first destinations.
A middle category between ‘business’ and tourist . Iberia has revealed details of its new economy class ‘premium’ , which will incorporate gradually to its planes from next summer . New seats and more recline, more space between seats -20% with respect to the category more affordable – and a bigger screen -12 inches in front of the 9 inches in the economy class – they are some of the advantages of the tourist class, ‘premium’, with the Iberia aims to respond to the demands “of travelers willing to pay a little more for more comfort and services on board and on land,” according to Marco Sansavini, chief commercial officer of the airline.
The clients of the tourist ‘premium’, in addition, will be able to carry an extra bag, they will have a menu of differentiated, priority boarding compared to the economy class counters differential in the airport of Barajas (Madrid). The big unknown is, for the moment, the price. “It will define the destination and by destination,” warns Sansavini. A flight in economy costs, on average, a third of the cost associated to the class ‘business’. Iberia estimates that the potential of the tourist ‘premium’ is 10% of the size of the cabin : “The risk of transfer of ‘business’ tourist ‘premium’ is limited. The majority will be travellers of the category most economic and new customers.”
Buenos Aires, Bogota, Lima and Chicago will be the first destinations to have a new tourist ‘premium’ of Iberia, which will equip its fleet of long range radio with this category and will be the first airline in Spain to offer this product to Latin america -other rivals in europe and Air France already have-. So, in the 8 Airbus A330-300 will be 21 seats tourist ‘premium’ , while 13 A340-600 will have 23 seats . The fleet of A350-900 also fits this category, and the A330-200 will be out of the project due to the nature of the destinations to which they fly -higher density – and the size of the plane. During the first few months, the aircraft Iberia will have a tourist ‘premium’ but this category shall not be placed until it is available on the return journey. Until then, it will be offered as an ‘upgrade’.
