Isidoro Álvarez, discreet businessman who enlarged the legacy … – The País.com (Spain)

Isidoro Álvarez Álvarez, 79 (Borondes, Asturias 1935), has died after 25 years at the forefront of El Corte Ingles, the Spanish distribution group with 93,300 employees. Sobrino second Ramón Areces, founder of the group and one of the largest Spanish fortunes, Isidoro Alvarez was his closest collaborator. The succession process within the entity had already been designed by Areces own in October 1987 and the appointment of Alvarez was announced a few hours after learning of the death of its founder. It was the August 2, 1989 and then was 53 years old.

The newly elected president of the giant Spanish distribution company that was born in a small shop open public Callao (Madrid) in 1940 , was the son of Dimas Alvarez (cousin Areces) and Eustaquia Alvarez, although he disliked his relationship to his responsibilities in the distribution chain should be linked.

The day of his appointment was also designated lifelong patron and chairman of the Areces Foundation, which controlled the company-and controlled in accordance with the last wishes of the patriarch.

Isidoro Álvarez carried in the senior management of the company since the sixties and was considered as alma mater of business. Obsessed with customer service for many years spent up to twelve hours a day in department stores and had the habit of doing incognito visits to stores. A great organizer, very discreet and a character so little given to public appearances to talk about himself, he graduated in Economics from the Complutense University in 1957, and developed his entire career at the company, which he joined 18 years old.

With 24 years and having acquired some shares in the company, he entered the restricted board of El Corte Ingles and Induyco subsidiary company engaged in textiles. For years a career as a business executive distribution was forged, until he reached the presidency: “The department store is the first and most representative forms of distribution,” then said in one of his rare public appearances

In his long career in front of El Corte Ingles, Alvarez was responsible for the expansion of the brand through the purchase of Atlantico Department, which took over the company in June 1995

He created new centers and was responsible for the diversification of the brand, which now reaches a turnover of 14.000 million. He also managed to keep the legacy of the Ramón Areces Foundation, established in March 1976 and has as its aim the development of social education, culture and research.
