US unemployment at its lowest level in seven years – The Economist

The US economy generated 223,000 jobs in April, and the unemployment rate one-tenth point was reduced to 5.4%, its lowest level since May 2008, the Labor Department reported.

The job creation in the US rose in April to the extent of analyst expectations, also reducing the unemployment rate, according to official data released Friday the Labor Department.

The economic activity generated 223,000 jobs last month, while analysts’ forecasts were 218,000 net new jobs.

On the other hand, tenth unemployment rate fell point, to 5.4%, compared with the 5.5% recorded in March, its lowest level since May 2008.

However, the figure for job creation March was revised down sharply, to 85,000 against 126,000 new jobs announced in the first estimate of the indicator.

The construction companies created jobs at a good pace while drilling oil and gas fired workers for the fourth month in a row.

The average wage in April rose just 2.2% over last year.
